Rationale and context of the assignment:

The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) within the Division of Communication comprises Web, Social Media and Multimedia teams working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, DSS draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability. DSS seeks to hire a Consultant (**Digital Content Strategist**) responsible for designing, developing and implementing social media content strategies applicable to daily community management as well as specific campaigns. The strategies should engage audiences, especially young people, in dynamic, interactive and meaningful ways in order to spark and sustain conversations around issues related to UNICEF’s mandate.
In addition to the social media content strategies, the Digital Content Strategist’s work will support strengthening youth engagement and supporting the rollout of UNICEF’s strategic youth engagement framework via digital channels. She/he will lead on an digital engagement strategy for youth related content on UNICEF’s global social media channels, strategizing on how to best engage younger digital audiences while also sustaining broader engagement of existing communities. The consultant will lead on the creation and coordination of key social media campaigns, especially those related to ongoing emergencies, as well as working closely with colleagues on digital marketing, monitoring and analysis, and moderation of platforms. Working under the supervision of the Digital Communications Specialist in the close knit Social Media and Engagement team, the Digital Content Strategist will serve as one of UNICEF’s key representatives in its global digital outreach.

Responsibilities:

· Drive an engagement strategy for youth related content on UNICEF’s global social media channels, strategizing on how to best engage younger digital audiences.

· Coordinate the creation of dynamic content on the numerous ongoing emergencies UNICEF is responding to and project manage emergency related campaigns as required.

· Spearhead the UNICEF global channels and Voices of Youth (VOY) content collaboration, ensuring VOY content is strategically integrated, when relevant on UNICEF channels.

· Project manage youth engagement initiatives like Twitter Takeovers with young activists, empowering them to speak out on issues that matter to them.

· Strategize on how to effectively reach our target audience of young people through social channels. Contribute digital guidance to the strategic framework on adolescent and youth engagement for UNICEF.

· Support the digital components of the rollout and application of the strategic youth engagement framework.

· Work on effective integration of offline and online youth engagement efforts.

· Help assess effectiveness and results of the new digital efforts in the youth engagement framework.

· Identify new digital tools and best practices and how these can be most effectively applied to deepen engagement with supporters – particularly young people.

· Act as the social media team focal point for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene campaigns, regularly meeting with relevant colleagues to promote UNICEF’s communications on the topic.

· Propose ideas for and lead on engaging social media content and campaigns, days and events, working with relevant colleagues to assess feasibility and create.

· Help drive digital editorial processes through active participation at editorial meetings.

· Monitor and moderate social media channels, flagging risk and opportunities to deepen engagement, including some out of hours/weekend shifts and during emergencies.

· Lead on the management of UNICEF’s presence on photo-led social media platforms, Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest.

· Lead on the writing of social media packs, fashioning engaging content from key messages.

· Keep track of efforts and activities of other UN agencies, non-profits and competitors, identifying content to be amplified and shared on UNICEF’s platforms.

· Pitch ideas for, craft and help coordinate social media friendly longer form content on platforms such as the UNICEF blog, Medium and BuzzFeed, with a goal of reaching younger audiences.

· Work with the Digital Strategy Section’s M&E consultant to measure and report on social media efforts.

· Liaise and work with graphic designers and agencies as needed, to produce visuals, infographics and apps for digital campaigns.

· Support other teams in HQ and offices worldwide on their day to day social media efforts and develop guidance documents and lead trainings when required.

· Participate in and represent the team at relevant conferences and events.

· Deputise for the Digital Communications Specialist as needed.

Qualifications or specialized knowledge/ experience required:

· 4+ years’ experience working on social media, digital marketing or editorial for an NGO, global company or publishing outlet.

· Strong experience and understanding of digital youth engagement

· Experience project managing complex campaigns or initiatives.

· Experience developing and implementing social media strategies.

· Strong creative disposition and understanding of what’s ‘shareable’ online.

· Proven copyediting skills and ability to write flawless copy on tight deadlines.

· Adept at using a wide range of social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Pinterest.

· Experience of blogging and knowledge of best practices.

· Knowledge of social media monitoring technology and can use social media measurement and listening tools such as Radian6, Gorkana, Social Bakers, Crowdbooster.

· Experience in reporting on quantitative and qualitative analytics.

· Proven ability to present and communicate new projects to a varied audience.

· Proven ability to manage multiple priorities within specified timeframes.

· Proven skills in communication, networking, strategic thinking, advocacy, negotiation, and ability to relate to a young audience.

· Strong awareness of social media communication behaviours in developing regions/countries.

· Consistently achieves high-level results, managing and delivering projects on-time.

· Proven ability to conceptualize, plan and execute ideas as well as transfer knowledge and skills.

· Understanding of digital fundraising strategies a plus.

· Experience of capacity building and training a plus.

· Awareness of best practices in user experience and design.

· Experience in working for the UN, UNICEF or with International NGOs or global organisations a plus.

· Must have excellent command of English (native speaker preferred). Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French a plus.

· Bachelor Degree, ideally in social science, international affairs, marketing or communications. Masters preferred but not essential.
