Position: Rapid Assessment Specialist/Consultant

Period of Initial contract: 4/September/2016 – 4/November/2016

Context:

The Syrian crisis is now well into its sixth year. During that time at least 250,000 people have been killed, with some independent Syrian organizations citing upwards of 450,000, among them up to 19,000 children. Approximately 11 million people have been forced from their homes. World Vision humanitarian responders are on the front lines of this crisis working in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq to bring aid and hope to children, families and communities.

Since 2011, World Vision has helped over 2.37 million refugees, displaced people and vulnerable host community members. Last year 1.1 million people - among them 630,000 children – were supported. Food assistance, emergency supplies, water and sanitation, health, education and child protection interventions reached children and families in need.

World Vision is committed to expanding humanitarian and resilience programming in its Syria Response. The ever-changing landscape of the crisis requires continual assessment of the issues and needs to inform the development and implementation of humanitarian programming. The Rapid Assessment Specialist will work to the Whole of Syria Team Leader to develop World Vision’s programming strategy for South Syria based on analysis of needs, mapping of key stakeholders and current response, and directed research into programming opportunities.

Key Objectives

The Rapid Assessment Specialist will be in charge of developing strategy for expanding programming in South Syria by gathering population data; identifying information gaps and response; facilitating and supervising data collection in the field; and drafting assessment reports, data analysis, secondary data reviews.

Qualifications

  1. MA degree in international relations, development, humanitarian issues, field research, etc.
  2. Having worked in a humanitarian context for at least 2 years with experience in assessments;
  3. Flexibility and adaptability are essential, as well as the ability to plan, take initiative and organize work independently. Impartiality, objectivity and confidentiality are imperative
  4. Strong command of GIS software, Excel, Word and Database software
  5. Familiarity with other information and data sources related to GIS
  6. Willingness to learn and capacity to innovate: The consultant must be inventive and eager to improve his or her own skills, and be capable to adapt, shape and develop tools best suited for World Vision’s activities;
  7. Ability to travel to the field for data collection, cross-checking the data and provide training to field staff
  8. Proven ability in strategic coordination with multiple and multilevel partners and stakeholders
  9. Strong commitment to World Visions core values.
  10. Ability to communicate cross-culturally and sensitive to other cultures.
