BACKGROUND:
Currently Healthcare waste management is an underperforming area in the health system that needs attention both on the level of education and training as well as recommendation on suitable treatment methodologies that do not harm the environment.
The Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014 and subsequent requests from UNICEF country offices highlighted the gap in the technical and market knowledge in Supply Division within this area to effectively support UNICEF country programs.
To support UNICEF Country programs and to support our Global Health Emergency response capacity there is a need within UNICEF Supply Division to further develop technical and product knowledge around general healthcare waste management, the different treatment technologies available and suitable application thereof, key considerations required for determining suitable interventions and how to develop appropriate specifications to cover the product range to support future country requests.
OBJECTIVE:
- Organize and undertake a 2 day training workshop on Health Care Waste Management for up to 20 participants covering:
- Different kinds of health care waste and risks associated with each kind. How the different kinds of health waste should be disposed of in an appropriate and environmentally friendly manner.
- Calculation of the different waste generated by the different health facilities in developing countries. Detailed information on the different waste treatment technologies available, including advantages and disadvantages of each.
- Standard pitfalls and failures within health care waste management and interventions in developing/program countries.
- International regulations, specifications and guidance on treatment of health care waste management.
- Recommended procurement specifications and product international standards for different technologies and different capacities (annex 1 attached as an example), including possibility for operation with alternative sources of energy.
- How to select an appropriate treatment technology and to calculate its loading capacity
- Following the training workshop, 1 day applied learning supporting UNICEF staff to apply the knowledge gained to develop appropriate technical specifications for 2 Health Care waste treatment interventions suitable for use in Program countries at district level.
