Background & Rationale

UNICEF is in the process of implementing its Gender Action Plan 2014-2017. The GAP elaborates the gender dimensions of the programmatic results across the seven outcome areas of the Strategic Plan along with the relevant indicators for measuring success. It also specifies the steps UNICEF is undertaking with regard to institutional effectiveness in implementing the programmatic work on gender, through commitment of resources and strengthening of staffing, capacity and systems. The Gender Section in the Programme Division serves as the Secretariat for the communication and implementation of the GAP.

Purpose

As part of ensuring the effective implementation and roll-out of UNICEF’s organization-wide Gender Action Plan (GAP; 2014-2017) during the 2016 year when its implementation will be accelerated, the Gender Section is seeking a Consultant to support the team working on the process of tracking and reporting progress on the key elements of this process internally and in interagency mechanisms. The consultant will do this primarily by supporting the maintenance and utilization of knowledge, learning, data, and reporting on gender related work across UNICEF and its partners. S/he will also support the organization of key meetings and events aimed at advancing GAP results.

Expected results: (measurable results)

1. Support the organization of key upcoming global events and meetings and the development and consolidation of relevant materials and the logistics for these events and meetings, including:

a) consolidation and distribution of research and advocacy materials for upcoming global meetings/events especially the CSW and UNGA

b) assistance in internal and external coordination to organize the events, collaboration with the development, posting, and sharing of key materials across the range of stakeholders for the International Day of the Girl Child (IDGC)

c) assist with the coordination of event logistics, including vendor contract management, registration and attendee tracking, and presentation and materials support

d) support the production of effective communication materials for the IDGC and any other global events

e) assistance in the overall organization of the global gender network meeting in terms of logistics, development of materials and its dissemination and follow-up

2. Support the maintenance of the Gender Section’s Teamsite and support Gender Section staff, Regional Gender Advisers and other extended network members in making effective collaborative use of these platforms by preparing and disseminating a concise action plan.

3. Support the work planning, collaboration and delivery processes and systems within the Gender Section, Core gender team, PD sections for implementing the GAP.

a) Support the Gender Section planning team in standardizing the internal procedural templates, systems and tools to gain efficiencies in meetings, follow up actions, progress tracking, etc.

b) Support the Section’s system for tracking and response to OEDs and requests from other Divisions in a timely manner.

c) Maintain the Section documents as appropriate within a shared drive, the Gender Teamsite and the OneDrive and support Gender Section staff, Regional Gender Advisers and other extended network members in making effective collaborative use of these platforms.

4. Support the process of coordination for the preparation of the 2016 UN SWAP report and the internal and external process for the preparation of the 2017 SG’s report on the Girl child

5. Provide research support to the Section for the reporting and implementation of the GAP.

Management

The consultant will be managed by the HQ Gender Section, reporting to the Programme Officer, and working in close collaboration with the whole team.

Duty Station: The consultant will be based in UNICEF HQ located in New York.

Key competences, technical background, and experience required Deadline

· University degree in social sciences, international development or related fields.

· 2 years of relevant professional work experience in international development related to gender equality.

· Ability to express ideas and concepts clearly and concisely in written and oral form.

· Prior experience with UNICEF’s Gender Action Plan and the Gender Sections’ material development or knowledge management an asset.

  • Strong organizational and coordination skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure

  • Strong team player able to work effectively within large and diverse teams

  • Familiarity with UNICEF systems, Office 365, and Sharepoint an asset

· Demonstrated success managing multiple projects and competing priorities

· Knowledge of computer systems, including internet tools, office applications, and interactive digital media.

· Fluency in English a must; knowledge of another UN language an asset.
